USER REVIEW of NEW VESPA GTV 300 + Recommendations

by admin on January 26, 2012

Video shot with just under first 500 miles. (Now over 1600 miles and going strong) List on these is just under $7K. With Dealer Prep plus Texas Tax it runs closer to $8K. I mentioned in the video that I had it up to about 75 MPH. Just for grins I removed the luggage case to see if removing that wind drag made a big difference in the top end. It did. Top speed was 84! I’m sure it shocked the highway drivers to see a Vespa in the fast lane, haha. Very smooth but still not recommended for the feint of heart. Don’t forget to wear proper motorcycle protection! ;) Quick 12v adapter instructions- Go to ScooterWest.com (no relationship with me) and order the kit ($50) and theft alarm adapter cable ($7). When your kit comes in, replace the cable that came with the 12V kit with the $7 adapter cable, remove old panel (one “star” screw), plug cable into the matching theft alarm plug and install new panel with original screw. You’re done! If willing to drill a hole in the old panel, save $$ by buying just the adapter cable and getting the 12V female plug on your own (Radio Shack)

ajbicycle January 26, 2012 at 6:47 pm

I purchased this same model/color last summer.
This scooter has been a pleasure to ride and own.

Scooter east is also a good place for scooter parts.

This is such a beauty. I ride a Ducati Sportclassic 1000 and getting this for touring around Japan. That box is so sweet. I got the red one after I saw your video. Thank you very much for a great presentation

@Lucronik The GTS doesn’t come with the front and rear racks and the small windscreen. That alone would make it a little lighter with a tad less drag, but I think it just comes down to your style. The GTV has the headlight on the fender. If that style and those extras don’t matter to you then go for the GTS for $1K less. I have to say that there are many times I was glad I had the luggage racks. You can always get one for the GTS. Regardless, all the 300cc Vespas are just plain QUICK. Enjoy!

very nice presentation

@TheRmeyPilot So im definetly getting a vespa in the near future but I cant decide between the GTS 300 Super or the GTV 300. Do they accelerate the same? Does it really just come down to what style you want?

TheRmeyPilot January 26, 2012 at 10:04 pm

I wish I could offer you other choices that are in the same category as the Vespa but I think there are none. I would definitely make sure I have the 300cc which means the GTV or GTS. I love them both. We Americans are actually very behind when it comes to scooters. Where I work, there are routinely (on nice days) 12-15 motorcycles and only 2 or 3 scooters. That is in stark contrast to last year when there were NONE. I am constantly promoting them. Your day is always better on a Vespa! ;)

gs032009 January 26, 2012 at 10:38 pm

Nice. This scooter is stunning, so is the colour scheme. I don’t own any vespa, never have but would love to, and this 300 gtv would be one of the top choices. Any others one should consider? It’s the scond time i see an american who owns a vespa, it is hard to imagine americans owning/riding scooters! You know that, don’t you? Why? I’m curious…:-)))

@lantzn
Thanks for the suggestion. I’m ordering it right now.

@poursuivant1 Try Obenaufs Oil and HDLP. It was formulated by a fireman for extreme heat and water treatment. You can find it at Cabelas or the manufacturers website. I treat my expensive leather jackets and shoes with it here in WA state which is very wet. Love it.

@apollo311 Very cool. Again, it was a toss-up on the GTS or GTV for me. As long as it was the 300cc version I knew it was going to be good. They don’t do portofino green on the GTS for some reason so it would have been the white or black for me. The drive train is all the same. I plan to get a Hero 2 HD camera and do some ride videos. Thanks for your comment and enjoy the ride!

Wow! Such an informative review! I just got my Vespa GTS Super ie in black. Love it so much! And i love the Mini Cooper, too! U cool, mister!

TheRmeyPilot January 27, 2012 at 12:50 am

@poursuivant1 I went back and forth with that exact bike and the 2011/12 with my cost/benefit analysis. (That particular one was $5500 with 6000 miles) Regarding the leather seat concerns… I am more concerned with our Texas sun and have only been caught in the rain once. I put on some leather conditioner (auto parts stuff) and it works fine. During my rain ride, I used the seat cover which is near the hinge underneath the seat stuffed in that hole. Worked great. Have fun riding! Dennis

poursuivant1 January 27, 2012 at 12:56 am

Thank you for such a informative video. I just bought the 250cc 2009 version of the GTV. I do worry about how well the leather saddle holds up in the rain. Do you condition it in any way?

TheRmeyPilot January 27, 2012 at 12:59 am

@0001111000220 – Yes, I do need to do that video. I am the king of procrastination. Until then, take a look at the instructions I spoke of in the initial written video description. I’m not kidding when I say less than 5 minutes. Remove the one “star” screw to remove the panel, plug the adapter cable to the alarm system (the plug will be obvious because it matches the adapter cable) and then install the new panel with that one screw. DONE! Contact me if you have any issues.

Great Video – thank you for being so thorough. I just bought this exact model (and color). I would love to see a video explaining the 12v adapter!

TheRmeyPilot January 27, 2012 at 2:37 am

@vespaet4 Thanks for your comment. I have only had my Prima cover since I purchased the bike so really not enough time for me to see if it wil last. I do use it just about every day. For $40 it goes on easy and fits well. The only problem I have with it is that it doesn’t have any protection from the muffler when the bike is hot so I have melted it a bit there. I’ve learned to wait a few minutes before covering it up or fold it where the muffler is so it doesn’t touch..

vespaet4 January 27, 2012 at 3:20 am

Nice scooter but the prima covers are crap don’t last very long

TheRmeyPilot January 27, 2012 at 4:06 am

@skaFelis Yes. Greetings! Would love to cruise Russia on a Vespa. A friend of mine also flies helicopters and did some work in the Ukraine. Said it was fantastic. We are all planning on renting a house on the Black Sea in the near future.

skaFelis January 27, 2012 at 4:11 am

Greetings from Russia!
You have really, really beautiful bike! Congrats! I have GTS 300, and i decided to install leather seat =) i’ve already installed a topcase, a front luggage carrier, a crash bars and i just can’t stop to improve my style =)

TheRmeyPilot January 27, 2012 at 4:35 am

The Vespa 300 has a great balance of weight / power. The GTV/GTS is about 325 pounds but the center of gravity is low. It handles very, very well at 50-60 MPH and it gets there VERY quickly so you have no issues when blending into moving traffic. I’m very confident with it at 65. Above that, it all depends on the wind and traffic. On an open highway with no gusty wind I have had it up to 80 indicated, which is about 76 actual on a Vespa, which run a bit high on the speedometer. Hope that helps!

55zebra January 27, 2012 at 5:07 am

You mentioned that you ride at 50-60 mph. How “stable” is the ride at that speed?
My wife has been considering purchasing one a “scooter” and this seems to be the right one.

coasterdan51 January 27, 2012 at 6:06 am

Thanks for the review. I have the exact same scooter, a 2012 GTV in Portofino Green. I bought it from Scooter West in CA.

I’ve had my GTV for only a week and a half and I’ve already had a lot of fun with it. It’s quick and it handles well. It rides well too, as you mentioned. I love the leather seat.

It’s really a dream machine!
