Will putting higher ah batteries in an electric scooter damage it?

by admin on March 5, 2010

I am modifying a schwinn S-1000 electric scooter, so the manuel will not help me decide.
It runs off 36v, and that’s all that matters, the amp hour rating doesn’t mean anything.
Doing this will lengthen the range but also the charge time.
Im planning on keeping the 36v, but changing it from 10ah to 12 or 14ah.
Any advice?

Your amperage drawn is the only thing that could damage your scooter motor. And for a given voltage, that depends on your scooter motor and circuit.

As your voltage remains at 36v and you are not changing the circuitry and, therefore, you are not changing the resistance, there should be no change in the amperes drawn when you upgrade to a longer lived battery. You should get the desired effect… a longer run between changing or recharging batteries.

Go do it.

Stay with the same type of chemistry for the batteries (e.g. lead acid, NMH, whatever). Otherwise you will need a new battery charger to match the type of the battery. There may also be some issues with a different battery type affecting the motor control circuit or the battery power indicator.

Increasing the AH rating using the same type of batteries and the same voltage should be perfectly safe.
